Chicago Trip August 2007
Tuesday, Sherry and I returned from a trip to Chicago to celebrate our granddaughter's first birthday. I went in the previous Wednesday morning, Sherry went in on Saturday morning. It was hot and humid during our stay. I was inside or in an air-conditioned car most of the time.
Last Thursday I drove to the south side of Chicago. I drove through neighborhoods where I lived and frequented between the 1950's and 1970's before I was married. Many places I stopped were popular places I went in my youth or places where something particular happened to me when I lived there (shown below).
The region on that south-east side of Chicago continues to deteriorate from the economic decline that started in the 1970's. The rate of deterioration is increasing in my unscientific assessment. It is a shame that places that once employed many tens of thousands of people are now filled with weeds and debris. Storefronts are boarded up and residences are showing their age too.
I may not go back to that south side region ever again. It is too depressing to know I once felt proud to live there and now because of economic conditions, so many places are breaking down or gone, overridden by wild growth of weeds.
On Thursday night, I visited with my brother, his wife, Bill Artus, and later, Angel Rodriguez in the Lansing and Calumet City areas. We all enjoyed the few hours we had together. It may be some time before I get to see them again.
On the other days I spent my time with my daughter, her husband, and our granddaughter. We had a very good time going out places and having all the joint families and friends over for the birthday party on Sunday. I chased my granddaughter around her home and played with her for many hours. She is growing so very fast.
On Monday, our daughter's family took us to Chicago's Navy Pier and we spent the bulk of the day there. I took a lot of pictures of Navy Pier. I am planning on publishing many of them this week. The one above is of the giant ferris wheel that we rode.
As a special treat, Sherry and I flew back home first class this time. The flight was smooth. We welcomed the wonderful weather here as we left the San Diego airport. We were home by Noon on Tuesday.
It was great to see everyone back in the midwest. I don't know when my next visit will be, but I have other folks to see in that next trip. Maybe some of them will visit us instead in the meantime...
I'm happy to hear that some of the presidential candidates from both parties are talking about real alternatives to fight the War on Terror. There has to be victory for us and also effective deterrence against our enemies. It's good to hear what was said so that our enemies know we aren't kidding. Some people think what was said was controversial. I think it was all in the right direction!
The next President will face more complex issues than we can imagine. I believe more wars are coming our way, therefore someone who knows how to win wars will get my presidential vote.
According to this survey, more people are reading the web for news. I've been doing that for about ten years now.
