A Grandfather's View

This Sunday, June 19th, is Fathers' Day. Traditionally that is a day where fathers should be showered with love and appreciation by their children. That is how it is usually perceived by me.

When my daughter was born, my life changed forever. I was present in the Delivery Room with Sherry when Jenny drew her first breath of air. I watched her umbilical cord pulse with life. I heard her express her arrival with a loud cry. I've listened attentively to her ever since.

I used to feed her, watch over her, change her diapers, give her a bath, entertain her, clothe her, brush her hair. That process never seemed routine. It was very natural to me.

I was present when she took her first steps without holding on to anything. She crossed the room between Sherry and I in waddling movements, but she made it without falling. I received her into my arms and we exchanged those special smiles between daughter and father.

I taught her how to ride a bike. I showed her how to use tools. Jenny learned from me how to use the computer. I took her to her first day of school and picked her up afterwards for many months. I helped her with her homework and provided insights into developing her own personal responsibility as she grew.

We sang songs together. I showed her how to record music onto cassette tape. Later I showed her how to videotape.

She made me cookies and brownies over the years. She made me sandwiches with a bite taken out of them before delivering them to me. She played practical jokes on me whenever she could. She gave me hugs and kisses every day.

I watched Jenny graduate elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. I walked her down the aisle to give her away to Michael, to be his bride.

Now I am told that by this time next year I could be a grandfather, if Jenny gets pregnant in the near future. I sit here today thinking about how cool that will be! I don't know how many events in my future grandchild's life I'll personally witness, but I'll be there in Spirit every time. Just as I am with Jenny.
