Kites Are Fun!

I love to fly kites! There is something very relaxing and marvelous to float a kite in the winds aloft at nearby Pacific beaches on a warm sunny day. The song, "Kites Are Fun, by the 1960's group, The Free Design reminds me of the happy times when I went and flew a kite, not always at the request of someone else. ;-)

So here I am, it's May and the warm light breezes blow through the house again here in our beautiful North San Diego County home. It will remain this way 99% of the time until late October of this year. Now is the time to consider the activities for the next few months as Spring fades gradually to Summer here.

This is a busy week for me. I have work to do on the web site for Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. I have some pre-production activities for a volunteer project for the nearby city of Carlsbad, California. My Twin Oaks Toastmasters club is having a Speech Marathon this Saturday where I'll be giving my first ATM-level speech and co-leading a session with my friend, Lela, on Gestures and Body Movements during the middle section of the program. I'll be helping with evaluations and other duties throughout the day there too.

It's also a time to reflect on the people that I knew who passed away in this month during prior years: My maternal Grandmother, Edna Wilson, who left this world on May 6, 1969; My high school friend, Nick Braico, who died in Vietnam on May 5, 1970; Another friend, Jay De La Torre, who passed away May 6, 2003 from diabetes; A brother of our very close friends (Angel and Linda Rodriguez), Jimmy Johns, who was murdered on May 29, 2003. All are remembered at this time of year.

I think I'll go to the beach more this year. The first couple years I lived here I was at the beach a lot. Then in the following years, less and less. Sherry and I will be taking some more extended weekend trips in our new Caravan. We look forward to our time together on such adventures.

I read that there is a National Oral History Project kicking off May 19th in Washington, D.C. and lasting for the next ten years. Two mobile recording booths will travel the country collecting over 250,000 interviews during that time. I would like to have some of my life-experience stories captured, I'll have to work on making that happen.

I am refreshing myself after the recent travels and experiences of the last couple weeks. I am feeling very good about how things are going with my life. If you see a guy flying a kite near a Carlsbad beach in the near future, it might be me having a wonderful time. Feel free to say hi, I'd like that a lot.
